If a Woman is Lying in Chains Anywhere, None of us are Free

Ok, so this century is only in its mid twenties, that explains everything.

Do you remember how dumb you were when you were 26? Now I’m not ready to write off this entire century, but do you remember the 1900’s?

I know, I know, I’m stuck in a nostalgic trap, I can’t let go of the past. But honestly, can you? Remember when the presidency was noble? But then again, gay marriage was illegal. I don’t know if racism was better or worse; maybe we just glorify the past because the present seems to be so terrible.

You know it was only in 1974 that women were allowed to have bank accounts? So the past was a nightmare, too. But we have to admit that the current Epstein scandal is beyond incomprehensible. It’s pretty obvious that the president was involved in this pedophile ring, since his name was mentioned more than 30,000 times in the Epstein files.

How is this OK? How is this even happening? Am I the only one who feels like we are living in some kind of alternate reality where the truth is no longer important? Who are these people, and why are we letting them rule our country?

I honestly don’t understand. This is not a conspiracy theory; there is actual evidence that very important people were involved in sexually abusing young girls. Yes, in some ways, society as we know it may collapse if people start naming names. But is this the society that we want?

I mean, when Clinton was president, they were ready to take him down for having consensual sex with a legal-aged woman. How can we have these double standards? And yes, if Bill Clinton was involved in the Epstein case, he should be prosecuted. So should Bill Gates, even though he has done a lot of good in this world.

If we don’t draw the line at sexually abusing girls, where is our line? Do we even have any standards? This is truly out of control, and it is unacceptable. I’ve seen many memes that suggest that it is so American that these rich men were sexually abusing girls, and the only person in jail is a woman.

This is the exact reason that survivors of sexual abuse do not speak out. We think we are so modern, but our society is still a twisted patriarchy.

If we let billionaires get away with this, then it’s true, money is all this country cares about.

But most of us are not billionaires, so why are we letting them trample over our moral standards? We are better than this; we deserve a justice system that is better than this. This is not a partisan issue; there are men on both sides of the aisle who were involved in this scandal. You know what else I’ve seen all over the internet? There were no trans, gay, or immigrant individuals involved in this horrible sex ring.

These were mostly straight, white, Christian men. I don’t blame Christianity, and I don’t blame all men; I blame a broken system that doesn’t believe women victims and lets rich people do whatever they want. We also have to believe that just because the ring leader, Epstein, died, this abuse could still be going on. Maybe in a different way, maybe in a different place.

We owe those women who have spoken out about the Epstein case. What on earth would motivate them to lie about such horrors?

We owe it to ourselves and our country to find out the truth. We know it’s ugly. As truth often is.

The real question is, who are we as a people if we let the president and his cohorts get away with this? The world is watching, and they are very angry and disappointed in us. We should all be very enraged and sad.

Justice takes courage, and hopefully, we can vote in government officials who dare to challenge the powers that be. It is our responsibility as a nation, as a people, as human beings, to bring accountability to this issue.

Again, I will reiterate my favorite saying, with a slight modification: “If a woman is lying in chains anywhere, none of us are free” — Anonymous.
